Giving Birth in Texas: Screening & Discussion on Maternal Mortality
November 12, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
You’ve heard the dire statistics around maternal mortality in our country—the number of women dying has doubled in 25 years, giving the US a higher rate than 45 other countries. Women of color carry a disproportionate part of this weight; chronic stress from racism and social inequality lead to more complications.
What’s being done to combat this epidemic? Join us on November 12 at the historic Texas Theater for a screening and panel discussion involving some of the key birth workers and organizations serving black women in the DFW area, including Circle of Health International (COHI), Deeds Not Words, Every Mother Counts, Re+Birth Equity Alliance, The Natural Way Birthing Project, Abide Women’s Health Services, and The Afiya Center.
We’ll be watching two short films from the CNN series Giving Birth in America, focusing on Louisiana and California. Following the films will be a discussion featuring film producer Clancy McCarty, Sen. Wendy Davis (Deeds Not Words), Nikia Lawson (The Natural Way Birthing Project), Jen Sarduy (Re+Birth Equity Alliance), Cessilye Smith and Bethany Stricker (Abide Women’s Health), and Marsha Jones (The Afiya Center).
